1 Samuel 14:33

14:33 Now it was reported to Saul, “Look, the army is sinning against the Lord by eating even the blood.” He said, “All of you have broken the covenant! ¹  Roll a large stone over here to me.”

1 Samuel 16:7

16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t be impressed by ²  his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. God does not view things the way men do. ³  People look on the outward appearance, ⁴  but the Lord looks at the heart.”

18:8 This made Saul very angry. The statement displeased him and he thought, ⁵  “They have attributed to David tens of thousands, but to me they have attributed only thousands. What does he lack, except the kingdom?”

[14:33]  ¹ tn Heb “You have acted deceptively.” In this context the verb refers to violating an agreement, in this case the dietary and sacrificial regulations of the Mosaic law. The verb form is second masculine plural; apparently Saul here addresses those who are eating the animals.

[16:7]  ² tn Heb “don’t look toward.”

[16:7]  ³ tn Heb “for not that which the man sees.” The translation follows the LXX, which reads, “for not as man sees does God see.” The MT has suffered from homoioteleuton or homoioarcton. See P. K. McCarter, I Samuel (AB), 274.

[16:7]  ⁴ tn Heb “to the eyes.”

[18:8]  ⁵ tn Heb “said.” So also in vv. 11, 17.

[25:3]  ⁶ sn The name נָבָל (Nabal) means “foolish” or “senseless” in Hebrew, and as an adjective the word is used especially of persons who have no perception of ethical or religious claims. It is an apt name for this character, who certainly typifies such behavior.

[25:3]  ⁷ tn Heb “good of insight”; KJV “of good understanding”; NAB, NIV, TEV “intelligent”; NRSV “clever.”

[26:25]  ⁸ tn Heb “blessed.”

[26:25]  ⁹ tn Heb “you will certainly do and also you will certainly be able.” The infinitive absolutes placed before the finite verbal forms lend emphasis to the statement.
